A professional nurse’s journey is often challenging, that’s not necessarily a bad thing - was anything worth doing ever easy? However, nurses all over Australia could certainly do without the unnecessary workplace drama, just ask one of our NPAA nurse members. Her story serves as an important reminder of the role that professional organisations play in advocating for their members.
While on much-needed leave, this dedicated nurse found her role changed without her input. The shock came not just from the change, but also from her employer's refusal to allow her to return to her position once her leave was over. Further exacerbating her distress was the fact that she had been dealing with workplace bullying, leading her to request a transfer to escape the hostile environment.
Finding herself in a difficult situation, she turned to the NPAA. Understanding the gravity of her predicament, the NPAA promptly assigned her a case manager to aid her through the process.
The case manager's first task was to help her file a discrimination complaint. The argument was straightforward: if her role had not been changed without her consent while she was on leave, she would have been able to return to work.
As the complaint moved into the conciliation phase, the case manager offered much-needed support and representation. Conciliation can be an intense process, with both parties arguing their case and trying to reach a fair agreement. Through this period, the case manager provided her with steadfast support, advocating for her rights and defending her interests.
Eventually, their efforts resulted in a successful resolution. The nurse received a $10,000 settlement, a clear acknowledgment of the unfair treatment she had endured. But more than the financial aspect, the outcome served as a confirmation that her rights as a professional nurse were important and deserved to be upheld.
Our nurse member's experience, although challenging, highlights the significant role professional associations like the NPAA play in supporting their members. Her story underscores the value of standing up for one's rights and the positive outcomes that can emerge from challenging situations when guided by dedicated support and advocacy.
