Case Win: Redundancy Turned Into a New Placement

Written by NPAV | Sep 30, 2026, 1:42:33 AM

A temporary change in what you can manage at work should not cost you your job.

Our member was put through a redundancy process after the requirements of their role changed. At the time, caring responsibilities for a family member meant they temporarily could not work every shift.

Their NPAA case manager took it up with the employer directly. The argument was straightforward. Our member could still do the role, and the limitation was temporary. The question put back to the employer was whether a temporary setback was reason enough to move someone on permanently.

The answer was another site nearby where our member could keep working while the caring responsibilities continued. The employer offered six months. NPAA negotiated twelve.

Our member came away with:

  • A 12-month placement at another site nearby
  • Their permanent role kept, on the same hours and the same pay
  • An additional casual contract on top, which works out as a pay rise

They signed, and kept their job. From first contact to signed contract took about four weeks.
